Readers, permit me to open my manuscript with these aphorisms, for students " Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself", and to ASUP body
"To a right-winger, unions are awful. Why do right-wingers hate unions? Because collective bargaining is the power that a worker has against the Government . Right-wingers hate that." _(Connotatively,only unionist will understand this laconic concept of thought)_
Indeed, strike is a negotiation tool -
Collective bargaining is the negotiating process between unions and Government to settle a variety of issues, including wages, hours, plant and safety rules, and grievance procedures meanwhile Negotiations can become heated If they reach an impasse, then the conflict can be referred to mediation, but that is not binding, If the union does not get satisfaction, it can resort to a strike but alas to student's disadvantage strike at the education sector is an coadjutor and abettor to many inimical and catastrophic effects...
We cannot afford to continue lagging behind. Education is our launch-pad to a more successful, more productive and more prosperous future, you will agree with me that one of the primary roles of education is to build and sustain individual and society’s development. It renews and improves the economic, social, political and cultural aspects of any nation, education upgrades the living standard of citizens and enables people to become better and more productive citizens. It is a human right that creates a safe, healthy and prosperous society.
Undoubtedly, the nation’s education sector is seriously in amorphous shape that required serious concern and immediate attention,
that our country is facing numerous challenges in education as a result of mindless impunity and corruption is not news to anyone especially _*with the demonstration of Strike by the academics staffs union of polytechnics, the education sector in Nigeria is now sitting on a time bomb, students can't afford to have further disruption of academic calendar, It is of great necessity, therefore, that the Nigerian government invests massively in education for the growth and development of the nation.*_
Strike actions have become rife in the Nigerian labour force especially in the Nigeria education system . Various unions and groups have continued to embark on strike actions across the country. "strike action is when a large number of workers stop working in protest" . In academic institutions , it usually happens when staffs of the institution refuse to work, usually involving non - payment of salaries or administrative reasons. Industrial actions as it usually termed continue to claim significant space in the academic calendars of Nigerian Tertiary Institutions .
Agreeably , industrial action in schools distorts academic plans and programs. It keeps students out of schools and makes them open to social vices and indolence. The trend of strike actions across Nigerian tertiary institutions has resulted in an inconsistent academic calendar system, as against a uniform system which would ease policy and decision making for the government, administrators , parents and the students, Industrial actions rob off academic time from school administrators and upon resuming from strike ; they tend to rush academic work, this might mean foregoing important part of course work , shortening semesters and in turn bombarding students with a laden of academic work with limited study time.
Pathetic enough, Government disburse funds heavily to Some sectors that don't really matter leaving behind a priority - Education,
the problem of education funding has been over the years a Subject of great concern to all stakeholders in the sector, the magnitude of the problem has consistently led to strikes by NUT, ASUP, ASUU, NASU and other bodies Coordinating the grievances of the workers.
It's time the Government reach Consensus with the ASUP body, let encourage the builders of our tomorrow, treat them well, give incentives. As Restructuring is imperative I beseech the Federal Government to do the needful and avert this impending educational menace.
