Nigerians consume 400 million condoms yearly – SFH

The Society of Family Health has said that Nigerians consume over 400 million condoms annually. Its Managing Director, Bright Ekweremadu, said this in Lagos on Tuesday. He was, however, quoted as saying that the 400 million condom consumption could fall below expectation based on the society’s estimation of unprotected sex in the country. He spoke during the launch of Flex condom, a brand that, he said, came with a lot of flavours and had more strength and could last longer during sex. He said, ”What we are doing now is expanding choices for the sexually active Nigerians who are using condoms. So we have varieties of condoms with different features to make sex worth it, for those who will use the condom. We are not promoting sex. What we are promoting is responsible sex. If you know you cannot abstain, the best thing is to use a condom; it’s safe for you and your partner.”

Russia to build nuclear power plants in Nigeria

Russia has signed a deal to build two nuclear power plants in Nigeria, as Africa's largest economy seeks to end its energy crisis. Russian state-owned company Rosatom will build one in the south, the other in the centre, sources at the Nigeria Atomic Energy Commission told the BBC. The deal's exact worth is unknown, although some reports suggest it is likely in the region of $20bn (£15bn). It is one of a number that Rosatom has been eyeing on the continent. The company is also involved in discussions in Ghana and South Africa. Nigeria hopes the plants, which will initially be operated by Rosatom before they are handed over, will help deal with the country's energy deficit. According to World Bank figures, more than 40% of the country was without mains electricity in 2014.

Bsc-Hnd, the ultimate discrimination eroding our dreams

I still can’t fathom the basis of discrimination between Bsc and Hnd, where in this part of my country, education is considered to be the major tool of every successful man and woman, and to be successful, we all set out in the quest of seeking admission into an institution where we could all be called an undergraduate and after few years become a graduate. During this quest, we all were given an option to either choose to attend a polytechnic or a university without stating on the jamb website the difficulties meant to be faced by the ones who chooses to attend a polytechnic. Considering the difficulties encountered during the admission seeking process, we were opportune to be admitted by a polytechnic of our choice also regarded as a higher institution. After being an undergraduate for a reasonable number of years in a polytechnic, sleepless nights, listening to lectures, making and taking notes, we successfully completed the programme only to find ourselves in a mess getting to t...
